Waterproof Vibrators for the Shower and Bath: How to Choose One
Short answer: a vibrator is only safe to take into the shower or bath if its maker says so — look for "waterproof" or "submersible" plus an IP rating such as IPX7 on the product page or care card. "Splashproof" or "water-resistant" means rinse-only. In our range, the We-Vibe Tango X, Touch X, Moxie+, Sync O, Nova 2 and Wand 2 all list IPX7 on We-Vibe's own product pages.
Waterproof, water-resistant or splashproof: what the labels mean
- Waterproof / submersible — the maker says the toy can go under water. Usually backed by an IP rating (IPX7 is the most common on vibrators).
- Water-resistant / splashproof — handles splashes and a rinse when cleaning. Not for the bath, and not for standing in the shower spray.
- No water wording at all — treat it as a dry-use toy.
Wording is not standardised between brands. The rating and the manual are what count.
What does IPX7 mean?
- IP ratings come from the international standard IEC 60529 ("Ingress Protection").
- The X means the product was not rated for dust. The 7 is the water digit.
- 7 = protected against temporary immersion. The standard test is immersion at up to 1 metre for 30 minutes.
- IPX8 = rated beyond IPX7, under conditions the maker states. Read the maker's numbers.
- A lower water digit (for example IPX4, splashing) is not a bath rating.
- An IP rating is tested on a new product with seals intact. Damage, cracks or a worn port cover can change that.

How to choose a waterproof vibrator
1. Pick the shape first
- Small, simple, easy to hold with wet hands → bullet (Tango X) or lay-on (Touch X).
- Internal + external → rabbit (Nova 2).
- Broad, rumbly external → wand (Wand 2).
- Hands-free or partnered → Moxie+ or Sync O.
- Not sure which shape suits you? See wand vs rabbit vs bullet vibrators.
2. Check the rating, not just the word "waterproof"
- IPX7 or higher, stated by the maker.
- If the listing says "splashproof" only, keep it out of the bath.
3. Look at the controls and grip
- Raised or textured buttons are easier to find with wet, soapy hands.
- A smooth, one-piece surface is easier to rinse and dry.
4. Check how it charges
- Magnetic or sealed charging ports mean no open socket for water to reach.
- Never charge a toy while it is wet or in the bathroom near water — dry it fully first and follow the manual.
5. Material
- Many waterproof vibrators use silicone. Check the exact material on the product page, and read our body-safe vibrator materials guide.
Using a waterproof vibrator in the shower or bath
- Read the manual first. Some makers set limits on water temperature, depth, time, or type of water (for example salt water, chlorinated pools or hot tubs). Follow them.
- Lock or switch on before you get in if the toy has a travel lock — buttons can be harder to use when wet.
- Water is not a lubricant. It can rinse natural lubrication and lube away. See "Lube and water" below.
- Keep your footing. Showers and tubs are slippery. Use a bath mat and a stable position.
- Try different angles. Pressing a toy against a firm surface changes how the vibration feels.
- Stop if anything feels wrong — discomfort, a change in how the toy sounds, or water behind a seal.
Lube and water
- Water-based lube washes away fastest in water.
- Silicone-based lube lasts longer in water, but many makers advise against using it on silicone toys. Check your toy's care card.
- Oil-based products are not recommended with many toys and condoms. Check the toy and condom packaging.

- Shop: lubes, oils and gels.
Cleaning, drying and storage
- Rinse after use, then clean as the care card says. A dedicated toy cleaner or mild unscented soap and warm water are common maker recommendations.
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth and air-dry fully, especially around buttons and charging points.
- Dry before charging. Always.
- Store dry, away from heat and direct sun, ideally in a pouch so toys do not touch each other.
- Inspect seals and surfaces now and then. A crack, tear or loose seam can let water in — stop using a damaged toy in water.

FAQ
Can I use any vibrator in the shower?
No. Only use a vibrator in the shower if the maker labels it waterproof or submersible, ideally with an IP rating such as IPX7. Splashproof toys are for rinsing only.
What does IPX7 mean on a vibrator?
IPX7 comes from the IEC 60529 standard. It means the product is protected against temporary immersion in water; the standard test is up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. The "X" means it was not rated for dust.
Is IPX8 better than IPX7?
IPX8 is rated for immersion beyond IPX7, under conditions the maker sets. Read the maker's stated depth and time, and follow the manual either way.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?
Waterproof or submersible means the maker says the toy can go under water. Water-resistant or splashproof means it handles splashes and rinsing, not baths.
Can I use a waterproof vibrator in a hot tub or pool?
Check the manual. Some makers exclude hot water, chlorinated pools, hot tubs or salt water even for IPX7 toys. If the manual does not say, stick to the shower or a normal bath.
Do I need lube with a vibrator in the shower?
Often, yes — water can rinse lubrication away. Silicone-based lube lasts longer in water, but check that it suits your toy's material first.
Can I charge a waterproof vibrator in the bathroom?
Dry the toy and the charging point fully, and charge it away from water, as the manual describes. Never charge a wet toy.
How do I clean a waterproof vibrator?
Rinse it, then wash it as the care card says — usually a toy cleaner or mild soap and warm water — and let it air-dry fully before storing or charging.
