Body-Safe and Care Search Trends in Canada: A 5-Year Google Trends Study

Quick answer: Across Canada, "silicone lube" is the most searched of the five body-safe and care terms we tracked, and it is the only one that grew every year from 2021 to 2026. Its yearly average Google Trends score rose from 37 to 60 (about 60% higher). "Water based lube" slipped for three years, then recovered in the latest year. "Body safe silicone", "phthalate free" and "toy cleaner" are searched so rarely in Canada that Google Trends shows no measurable interest in most weeks.

Methodology

  • Data source: Google Trends (trends.google.com), web search, all categories, English-language search terms entered exactly as listed below.
  • Terms: body safe silicone, phthalate free, water based lube, silicone lube, toy cleaner.
  • Period: November 7, 2021 to October 31, 2026, weekly data (260 complete weeks). The partial current week is excluded.
  • Where: Canada, the Canadian provinces, and the United States for comparison.
  • What the numbers mean: Google Trends does not report search counts. It reports a score from 0 to 100, where 100 is the highest share of searches in the chart's period and place. A score of 0 means too little data, not zero searches.
  • Yearly averages: we averaged the weekly scores over five 52-week windows, each starting in November.
  • Provinces: the province chart shows how each province's interest splits across the five terms (shares add up to 100%). Prince Edward Island and the three territories are left out because Google Trends returned data for two terms or fewer.
  • Canada vs US: each term was pulled for Canada and the United States together, so both countries sit on one scale per term. Google Trends adjusts for each country's total search volume, so this compares share of searches, not raw volume.
  • Limits: Google Trends uses a sample of searches. French-language searches are not included. "Toy cleaner" also covers children's toys, and "phthalate free" also covers cosmetics and household products, so not every search is about adult products.
  • Pulled: November 1, 2026. We pulled the data twice that day and got the same results.

How has Canadian interest in these terms changed since 2021?

Silicone lube rose in each of the five years. Water based lube slipped for three years in a row, then recovered in the latest year. The other three terms barely register.

What did we find?

  • Silicone lube leads and keeps growing. Its yearly average went 37, then 40, 46, 51 and 60. Its highest week was the turn of the year, December 28, 2025 to January 3, 2026.
  • Water based lube dipped, then recovered. Its yearly averages were 29, 24, 23, 20, 31. It peaked in late September 2022.
  • Safety questions are on the rise. Among queries related to "silicone lube" in Canada, Google Trends lists "is silicone lube safe" and "is silicone lube toxic" as rising, and marks "is silicone lube toxic" as a breakout query (growth too large to show as a percentage). Comparison searches such as "water vs silicone lube" also rank highly.
  • Material terms are rare in Canada. "Body safe silicone" and "phthalate free" showed measurable interest in only 7 and 7 of 260 weeks. People may search for materials in other words, such as product names or "is it safe" questions.
  • Toy cleaner is small but up. It showed data in 28 of 260 weeks. Its latest yearly average (10) is its highest, but the term also covers children's toys: "baby toy cleaner" is its top related query, ahead of "adult toy cleaner".

How do the provinces compare?

Silicone lube is the largest of the five terms in every province with enough data, at 41% to 50% of combined interest. Ontario has the lowest silicone lube share (41%) and one of the higher toy cleaner shares (17%, behind Manitoba at 19%). Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest silicone lube share (50%) and the lowest toy cleaner share (11%).

When each term is measured on its own, Québec scores lowest, or tied for lowest, for every term. This is most likely because many Québec searches are in French, which this study does not cover. It should not be read as lower interest.

How does Canada compare with the United States?

  • Silicone lube: almost level. Canada averaged 40 and the US 42. Both rose between the first and the latest year.
  • Water based lube: higher in the US (42 vs 26 in Canada).
  • Phthalate free: far higher in the US (28 vs 1.8). Much of this interest may relate to cosmetics and household products rather than adult products.
  • Body safe silicone and toy cleaner: low in both countries, and higher in the US.
