Quick answer: Of five intimacy-related search terms tracked across Canada, "lingerie" is searched the most in every province, with a typical weekly Google Trends score between 61 and 67 in every year. "Sex shop" has slipped, with a typical weekly score of 20 in the first year and 13 in the latest year. "Sex toys" was steady at a typical score of about 20, apart from one unusual 44-week stretch from June 2025 to April 2026 that we explain below. Québec looks different from the rest of the country, partly because this study does not cover French-language searches.
Methodology
- Data source: Google Trends (trends.google.com), web search, all categories, English-language search terms entered exactly as listed below. Public data only. No customer, order or website data was used.
- Terms: sex toys, sex shop, lingerie, massage oil, couples games.
- Period: November 7, 2021 to October 31, 2026, weekly data (260 complete weeks). The partial current week is excluded.
- Where: Canada and the Canadian provinces, with the United States for comparison.
- What the numbers mean: Google Trends does not report search counts. It reports a score from 0 to 100, where 100 is the highest share of searches in the chart's period and place. A score of 0 means too little data, not zero searches.
- Typical scores: because one term had an unusual stretch (see the findings), the main table uses the median weekly score per 52-week window, which is not pulled up by a short spike. Each window starts in November.
- Provinces: the province chart shows how each province's interest splits across the five terms (shares add up to 100%). To keep the unusual stretch from skewing the split, it uses November 7, 2021 to May 31, 2025. The table also shows the "sex toys" share for the full five years. Prince Edward Island is included. The three territories are left out because Google Trends returned no data for one or more terms or only very small samples.
- Canada vs US: each term was pulled for Canada and the United States together, so both countries sit on one scale per term. Google Trends adjusts for each country's total search volume, so this compares share of searches, not raw volume.
- Limits: Google Trends uses a sample of searches. French-language searches are not covered, which matters most for Québec and parts of New Brunswick and Ontario. "Couples games" can also mean video games and party games, and "massage oil" can mean spa and cooking-style searches, so not every search is about adult products. Interest is not the same as buying.
- Pulled: November 2, 2026. We pulled the data twice and got identical results for all 260 weeks, the province splits and the Canada vs US series.
How has Canadian interest in these terms changed since 2021?
Lingerie is the largest term throughout. Sex shop declined. Sex toys was flat except for one unusual stretch. Massage oil and couples games stayed low and steady.

What did we find?
- Lingerie leads. Its typical weekly score stayed between 61 and 67 in every window. Its highest week was February 6 to 12, 2022 (score 94).
- Sex shop slipped. Its typical weekly score went from 20 in the first year to 13 in the latest year. Its highest week was the turn of the year, December 26, 2021 to January 1, 2022 (score 28). The term is still searched more in Canada than in the United States (see below).
- Sex toys had one unusual stretch. For 44 straight weeks, June 1, 2025 to April 4, 2026, the weekly score ran between 48 and 100 in Canada, then fell back to 18 the following week. Outside that stretch the weekly score stayed between 15 and 32. The jump was abrupt, held at a similar level for months, and is not visible in the United States series. We do not know the cause and do not claim one. Because of it, the five-year average for "sex toys" (31 in Canada) is higher than the typical week (21).
- The unusual stretch is mostly an Ontario effect. Ontario's "sex toys" share of combined interest is 19% for November 2021 to May 2025 but 37% across all five years.
- Massage oil and couples games are small and steady. Massage oil's typical score was 8 to 9.5 in each window. Couples games was 3 in every window and showed data in 259 of 260 weeks. Both peaked around the New Year or Valentine's Day (massage oil: February 8 to 14, 2026).
How do the provinces compare?
Lingerie is the largest of the five terms in every province, at 49% to 67% of combined interest. Québec has the largest lingerie share (67%) and the smallest sex toys share (8%). Because French-language searches are not covered, we cannot say whether Québec's interest is lower, only that English-language search interest is distributed differently there.
Outside Québec, the split is similar. British Columbia and Manitoba have the highest lingerie shares (60% and 59%). Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island have the lowest (49% each) and the highest sex toys shares (32% and 29%). Provinces with small populations have fewer searches, so small differences between them are less reliable.
| Province | sex toys | sex shop | lingerie | massage oil | couples games | Sex toys share, all 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta | 25% | 10% | 54% | 8% | 3% | 24% |
| British Columbia | 20% | 11% | 60% | 7% | 2% | 20% |
| Manitoba | 23% | 7% | 59% | 8% | 3% | 25% |
| New Brunswick | 24% | 15% | 54% | 5% | 2% | 23% |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | 32% | 11% | 49% | 5% | 3% | 30% |
| Nova Scotia | 23% | 11% | 56% | 7% | 3% | 27% |
| Ontario | 19% | 14% | 55% | 9% | 3% | 37% |
| Prince Edward Island | 29% | 11% | 49% | 7% | 4% | 28% |
| Québec | 8% | 22% | 67% | 3% | no data | 9% |
| Saskatchewan | 24% | 9% | 58% | 7% | 2% | 25% |
Table 2. Province shares of combined interest, November 2021 to May 2025. The last column covers the full five years and includes the unusual stretch. "No data" means Google Trends returned too little data for that term.
How does Canada compare with the United States?
- Sex shop: about twice as high in Canada (typical score 53 vs 28 in the US).
- Lingerie and massage oil: somewhat higher in Canada (lingerie 67 vs 60; massage oil 31 vs 23).
- Couples games: higher in the US (48 vs 40 in Canada).
- Sex toys: similar in both countries (Canada 21, US 24) once the unusual stretch is set aside.
| Term | Canada, typical weekly score | US, typical weekly score |
|---|---|---|
| sex toys | 21 | 24 |
| sex shop | 53 | 28 |
| lingerie | 67 | 60 |
| massage oil | 31 | 23 |
| couples games | 40 | 48 |
